Why photography?

This question was posted on a forum, and I chose to answer it:

because it seems to be the only way i can make an important difference to peoples’ lives…

it’s a bit dramatic, as i always am especially when i write, but that’s not important. what’s important are the thoughts that went through my head almost immediately after i penned that line down.

the difference i could make in people’s lives, loosely, and “cliche-ly” (is that a word?) put, is that over the years, the memories would be relived after seeing those images. (go dramatic here on my behalf, i’m insomniac-ing tonight so abit off-form)

then, as off-form as i can be, from a very emotional thought, i got all technical.

a few minutes before i answered that question, i was browsing other photographers’ works and perhaps you might realise, a current trend is using textures that have been added into the image to give it a very vintage and artistic feel. i can’t post an example here because none of my images have ever been treated that way, and it won’t do to well for me to steal someone else’s work to put here, even for illustrative purposes.

so… what?

i begged the question: do those textures, admittedly beautiful as they may be, add to the “reliving of memories” experience that one might have after 20 years? i would have to say no, but so many questions then surface. it would mean that perhaps alot of other techniques we apply to our images could also serve no purpose to the improvement of the crystalisation of memories i speak of, which i feel could make a difference in a person’s life.

so, i should just uninstall photoshop?

there will always be unanswered questions, but sometimes, this job is not about photography. all that exposure and white balance settings are just.. noise. the clarity of the image comes from your true ideal of “why photography?”.

and then we think about life, at least i did. and the last lingering thought in my head:

the best thing you can do with your life, is to change some(many)one else’s for the better.

i don’t profess to do that everytime/at all, but it would be GREAT if i could do it over and over again.
